Now graduate students will also be able to apply directly for PhD by giving UGC NET!
UGC Chairman M. Jagadish Kumar has recently announced that students pursuing a four-year honors degree with 75% marks or equivalent grade will now be able to directly apply for PhD by appearing in the UGC NET exam. This change is in line with the New Education Policy 2022 and aims to provide more opportunities in higher education.
What was there before?
Earlier, to apply for PhD, students had to complete a master’s degree with at least 55% marks.
What Now?
Now, students who have obtained a four-year Honors degree with 75% marks or equivalent grade will be able to apply for PhD directly by giving UGC NET.
Other important points:
Relaxation of 5% marks or equivalent grade will be given to students belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), Other Backward Class (OBC), Disabled and Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
UGC NET exam will be conducted in June 2024 and applications can be made till 10 May 2024.
This change is a big relief for those students who want to directly pursue PhD.
