Samsung is splitting its book-style foldable range into the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra, alongside the smaller clamshell Flip8. Announced on 22 July, the lineup gives the two Fold models different screen shapes, weights and camera systems.
That creates a more useful comparison than treating the Ultra name as the only decision. The lighter Fold8 and the larger-screen Ultra are built around different priorities.
Two Fold models, two sets of trade-offs
Samsung lists the Fold8 at 201 grams, with a 7.6-inch internal screen and a 5.5-inch cover screen. Its internal display has a 4:3 shape, while the cover uses a 10:16 format. The device has a 4,800 mAh battery.
The Fold8 Ultra moves to an 8-inch internal display and weighs 215 grams. Samsung specifies a 5,000 mAh battery, support for up to 45 W wired charging and a 200-megapixel main camera. Its unfolded body measures 4.1 mm thick.
Those figures are manufacturer specifications. They do not establish real battery endurance, charge time or camera quality. In particular, a larger battery has to be considered alongside screen size, software and how often the phone is used open.
Both models use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy platform. Samsung also describes changes to their internal structure and foldable displays, but durability claims still need to be read under the manufacturer’s stated conditions rather than treated as proof that a device cannot be damaged.
Check the shape in the tasks you do
A foldable’s proportions affect everyday tasks: typing with the phone closed, holding it for a call and arranging two applications when it is open. A larger diagonal does not tell you how comfortably a particular document or app will fit.
If possible, try a familiar task on both Fold models before choosing. Open the applications you actually use and check their layout, then repeat the task on the outer display. Also consider the complete weight with a case, rather than the bare-device figure alone.
Samsung opened pre-orders in selected markets with the announcement. Australian pricing, offers, colours and delivery dates need local confirmation. The accompanying Flip8 serves a different preference for a compact clamshell and should be compared on that basis.
