Apple has announced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Introduced on 9 September, the device opens into a larger workspace for apps and closes into a narrower phone for everyday use. Orders are scheduled to begin on 16 October, with availability from 23 October.
Those dates place the Duo beyond the usual September buying decision. It is an announced product, and Apple’s descriptions of its performance and durability are manufacturer claims rather than results from our own testing.
Two screens change the app experience
The inner display is the main reason to consider the design. Apple has adapted iOS for the larger canvas, giving apps more room for content and multitasking. The outer screen handles tasks that do not need the phone unfolded, such as checking information or making a quick reply.
For a prospective buyer, the practical question is how often that extra space would be useful. Reading a document beside another app is a different task from scrolling through a social feed. Check how your essential apps use the wider layout once demonstrations or review units become available; a larger panel alone does not ensure a better app experience.
Apple says the inner display has a nano-texture finish to reduce glare. It also plans support for Apple Pencil with USB-C later this year. The Pencil feature should therefore be treated as a future addition, rather than something to assume will be ready on the first day of sales.
The hardware Apple has announced
The phone uses Apple’s A20 Pro chip and a titanium hinge, with a vapour chamber for thermal management. Its battery system is split across the two halves. Touch ID is built into the side button, providing fingerprint authentication in the folding design.
Apple lists 48-megapixel main and ultra-wide cameras. Camera specifications describe the hardware, but do not settle questions about moving subjects, night photographs or consistency between lenses. Those require images taken in comparable conditions.
The announced finishes are Star White and Night Sky. Buyers should check Australian pricing, storage options and local availability before comparing the Duo with a conventional iPhone or another foldable. Overseas launch prices are not a reliable substitute for an Australian retail quote.
Before committing to a foldable, also compare the repair arrangements, cover for accidental damage and the cost of a suitable case. The larger inner screen may suit frequent reading and multitasking, while its everyday handling will be easier to judge once the product is available to try. The October launch leaves time to assess those details beyond the announcement.
