Sonos has started rolling out Sonos 27, a software update that changes app navigation, adds portable surround-speaker arrangements and opens an early-access connection to outside AI assistants. The company announced the release on 8 September.

Several other features in the same announcement arrive later. Keeping those dates separate is essential if you are updating an existing system or considering new hardware.

What starts rolling out now

The updated app organises navigation around Home, System and Search, with options such as pinning favourite rooms. Sonos also adds Siri and Shortcuts support on iPhone and a revised iPad layout.

Portable surrounds let two matching supported portable speakers take on a home-cinema role near a compatible soundbar. Sonos identifies Move 2 and Sonos Play as the portable options, and Arc Ultra, Arc, Beam Ultra and Beam Gen 2 among the compatible soundbars. This is a specified combination, not support for any two wireless speakers.

Sonos says its positioning system uses brief high-frequency sound signals to determine the speakers’ relative positions and change their role. The practical attraction is using the same portable pair for music away from the TV and for a film when they are back in position.

AI access comes with separate stages

Sonos 27mcp launches in Early Access. It uses the Model Context Protocol to connect the sound system to compatible outside assistants, with ChatGPT and Claude named in the announcement.

An assistant connection introduces another place from which a system can be controlled. Before enabling it, check the connected account and the permissions involved, particularly on a shared household or office system.

The company’s own Sonos 27voice assistant is due in Early Access later in the northern hemisphere autumn. Custom Agents are targeted for 2027. Neither should be described as a finished part of today’s rollout.

Headphone linking is also later: Sonos schedules it for 29 September alongside Sonos Ace Ultra, initially in Early Access. It is designed to connect those headphones into the Sonos system rather than relying only on a nearby phone’s Bluetooth connection.

Sonos 27 is a free update for S2 products, with individual features dependent on hardware. Check the feature’s compatibility list before assuming that an older device receives every capability. ULKA’s news coverage follows both the software and those hardware boundaries.
