Apple’s latest major software updates became available on 14 September, bringing the features previewed at its June developer conference to compatible devices. Siri AI is beginning a beta rollout in English, alongside changes to Photos, Safari and family controls. Installing the new operating system does not mean every device receives every Apple Intelligence feature.
The release covers Apple’s software platforms, with hardware, language and regional requirements varying by feature. Check the update offered by your own device and the eligibility information attached to the features you want to use.
Siri AI begins in English
Apple describes the new Siri as a more conversational assistant that can work with personal context, information on the screen and actions across apps. A dedicated Siri app can synchronise conversation history across supported Apple devices through iCloud.
At launch, Siri AI is rolling out as an English-language beta. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support will follow in October. That is a planned expansion, not part of the language availability on 15 September.
For Australian readers, an English-language rollout is relevant, but it is still necessary to check device and region requirements. A phone eligible for an operating-system update may lack the hardware needed for a particular intelligence feature. The beta label also matters when deciding whether to rely on an assistant for a time-sensitive task.
Photos, browsing and family controls
Photos gains Spatial Reframing, Extend and an updated Clean Up tool. These expand the available editing options, so it is useful to retain the original when making substantial changes to a photograph. Image Playground also receives expanded image-creation capabilities.
Safari adds tools for organising tabs by topic and receiving notifications when a website changes. Product restocks and price changes are among Apple’s examples. Confirm the notification settings before relying on an alert to catch an important update.
The family features include Ask to Browse, which allows a parent to require approval before a child opens a new website in Safari. A redesigned Screen Time interface brings an overview of usage, time allowances and schedules. After updating a child’s device, review those settings together rather than assuming an existing routine will map exactly to the new controls.
Before installing
Back up important data and confirm that essential work, banking and accessibility apps support the new release. Leave enough time for the installation and any follow-up account prompts. If the device is managed by an employer or school, follow its update policy.
Apple also reports performance and connectivity improvements. The announcement’s speed claims come from Apple’s testing and should not be read as a promise that every older device will improve by the same amount. The most useful first check is whether the apps and features you depend on continue to work as expected.
