Amazon’s new Fire TV Stick 4K is on sale in Australia for A$129. Amazon Australia announced the device on 1 October and said it was shipping that day through Amazon.com.au and JB Hi-Fi. A redesigned Fire TV Remote is also available to pre-order on its own for A$24.95, with shipping from 22 October.
What the new stick changes
Amazon describes the Fire TV Stick 4K as the first Fire TV Stick to combine its slim, portable design with 4K output. Like the Fire TV Stick HD released earlier this year, it uses what Amazon calls Direct Power: the included cable lets you run it from your TV’s USB port, with no separate power adapter.
Amazon says the stick is faster than the previous Fire TV Stick 4K Select and supports Wi-Fi 6, which it pitches at homes where several devices share the network. It has not published speed figures in its Australian announcement, so treat the performance claim as the company’s own until independent testing is available. If your streaming stutters today, the cause may be your home network rather than the player; our guide to finding the Wi-Fi bottleneck explains how to check.
The stick ships with the standard Fire TV Remote, Alexa+ Early Access and the Fire TV interface Amazon introduced at the start of the year.
The redesigned remote
The new Fire TV Remote has an asymmetric shape, with a flat top and a curved, weighted bottom, so it is easier to hold the right way round without looking. The home button has its own metal surface, and other buttons are indented or shaped to be found by touch. It adds a customisable star button, previously limited to Amazon’s more expensive remote, which can open a favourite app or toggle a setting such as captions or Dialogue Boost.
It includes TV power, volume and mute controls, and Amazon says it pairs with every Fire TV streaming player launched from 2019 onwards. A Fire TV Remote Plus with an aluminium housing, backlit buttons and a Find My Remote feature is due early next year to replace the Fire TV Remote Pro. Amazon has not given Australian pricing for it.
New Kindles on the same day
Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle range alongside the Fire TV hardware. It says the 6-inch Kindle and its aluminium-backed version went on sale on 1 October in markets including Australia, and that the new Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft open for pre-order on a rolling basis in the same regions.
