The best VPN for an Australian household depends on how many devices need it, whether you need to choose a local server and how much you are prepared to pay when the introductory deal ends. Mullvad, Proton VPN, NordVPN and Surfshark offer quite different answers to those questions. A longer feature list is not automatically a better purchase.

This shortlist compares documented plans, connection limits, billing terms and practical use cases, checked on 26 September 2026. It does not assign speed scores: a provider’s server capacity or advertising claim cannot tell you how a connection will perform on your home broadband. Start with the job you need the service to do, then try it on your own devices before committing to a long subscription.

These are use-case recommendations, not a claim that one service is universally fastest or most private. Read the app requirements for every device you intend to protect, including televisions and routers. A subscription can support a platform without providing identical features on it.

Mullvad makes the ongoing cost easier to understand

Mullvad’s pricing page takes an unusually simple approach: the monthly rate stays the same whether you top up for a short period or a longer one. That makes it useful for someone who needs a VPN for occasional travel or wants to avoid a large upfront payment. There is less arithmetic between an advertised monthly equivalent and the next renewal.

The service issues an account number when you create an account, and the published allowance is five devices. Keep that account number somewhere safe. For an individual with a phone and a laptop, the allowance may be ample; a household with tablets, spare computers and televisions should count its devices first.

Mullvad explicitly says that it does not offer port forwarding. That matters if a particular application depends on an incoming connection through the VPN, although many everyday browsing tasks do not. Its pricing page also describes a refund period and exceptions for cash payments. Check those terms before choosing a payment method, rather than assuming all methods are treated alike.

For an Australian buyer, the page displays an indicative Australian-dollar equivalent, but the underlying rate is denominated in euros. Currency conversion and your payment provider can affect the final debit. Mullvad is the most straightforward choice here for budgeting around a short commitment; that is a judgement about its billing model, not a performance award.

Proton separates a useful free plan from location control

Proton’s plan documentation lists unlimited data on the Free plan, with one simultaneous connection and a server assigned from a limited country list. That makes it a sensible place to try the apps and decide whether you will actually use a VPN regularly.

It is less suitable if your requirement is an Australian exit location. Australia is not in the documented Free country list, while the paid server directory lists Australian locations. Choosing an Australian server and simply using a VPN while you are physically in Australia are different requirements.

VPN Plus adds more location choice, more simultaneous connections, NetShield filtering and other features. Proton also sells bundles that include its mail, storage and password products. Someone already paying for several Proton services should compare the combined subscription against separate purchases, but a bundle has little value if the extra services will sit unused.

Platform details deserve attention. Proton’s own support page qualifies some networking behaviour by platform, and a feature listed for the service should not be assumed to operate identically on every phone and computer. For a first subscription, install the intended apps and check the connection controls you need before upgrading purely for an advertised feature.

NordVPN offers Australian city choices with renewal caveats

NordVPN’s Australian server page lists Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. That gives Australian customers specific locations to consider rather than only a country selector. The useful question is which location works well with your connection and services, not which city looks closest on a map.

The Australian Basic offer documents protection for up to ten devices. Higher packages add products and features, so compare the precise package name rather than assuming every NordVPN offer includes the same security tools or storage.

The billing terms warrant a careful read. The first-term price is introductory, renewal is automatic unless cancelled, and the renewal price can be higher. The terms also explain that the next charge can occur before the current subscription ends. Put the billing date in your calendar when you buy, rather than waiting until the last day to decide.

NordVPN is worth shortlisting for someone who wants those local city options and a multi-device subscription. Its claim to be the fastest service is a vendor claim, not the basis of this recommendation. Video calls, downloads and the sites you actually use provide a more useful personal acceptance check than an unrelated headline speed figure.

Surfshark suits large device lists, but inspect the extras

Surfshark’s pricing page advertises unlimited simultaneous VPN connections on paid subscriptions. That can simplify a household purchase where counting every phone, computer and television would otherwise force an upgrade or a second account. Its Australian location page also lists local server cities.

The more important comparison is often between Starter and the larger bundles. An antivirus subscription or data-removal service you already own should not be counted as a saving a second time. Read which features are included in the selected tier, then check the eligibility footnotes.

Those footnotes are particularly relevant in Australia. At this check, Surfshark’s pricing page restricted the advertised identity-theft coverage to eligible US residents and listed Incogni availability in selected regions that did not include Australia. Do not assume an international bundle illustration means every component is available locally.

A long plan is also a substantial commitment even when the monthly equivalent looks small. The pricing information explains that a multi-year initial term can be followed by annual billing. Compare the amount charged today, the next term’s duration and the renewal amount together. If you try an offer that converts into a paid subscription, record its cancellation deadline immediately.

Choose around everyday use and the next bill

Write down the devices you need to connect at the same time, the countries you need and the applications that must keep working. A VPN that is perfectly adequate for browsing may be awkward with a particular banking app, workplace connection or local device on your network. Check those tasks while any trial or refund window is still open.

Treat the VPN as one part of your setup. Signing into an account still identifies you to that service, and a VPN does not make a deceptive payment request trustworthy.
